We at Coast Grown have initiated a quality assurance program to ensure that each of our producer members adheres to the highest food safety and production standards in bringing their products to market. Based on the latest food safety standards developed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and notable institutions such as the University of California at Davis, we believe that you are guaranteed of receiving the highest quality and safest foods available from our producers. The Coast Grown quality assurance program includes: - Well-defined Produce Quality Standards to which each farm member is committed to adopting and adhering as a basis of their membership. - A Farm Ethics Self Evaluation to which each farm member undergoes on an annual basis. Coast Grown Produce Quality Standards All produce sold through Coast Grown must meet the level of our Produce Quality Standards. In order to be admitted into the cooperative, each producer must adopt and adhere to the Coast Grown Produce Quality Standards. The PQS specifies best practices and food safety guidelines in the following areas: - Produce handling - Produce packaging - Specific crop practices - Produce storage Coast Grown Farm Ethics Self Evaluation The cooperative has implemented the Farm Ethic Self Evaluation (FESE) system as a voluntary self-evaluation tool that encourages practices that promote the long-term health of our farmland and marketability of fruit, herbs and vegetables to our customers. The FESE helps growers reduce dependence on broad-spectrum pesticides and to document Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) for food safety. The FESE system is more than a farmland inspection tool. It is a commitment to the environment. The FESE consists of an evaluation performed at each cooperative member farm or ranch by a peer member of the cooperative on a yearly basis. Each member farm or ranch is evaluated and assigned points for nearly 400 good practices in the following categories: - Reducing pesticide use - Conserving soil and water - Promoting safe and fair working conditions The FESE scores in each category and the overall scores are used to assist producer members in consistently providing good, healthy products to the community. |
